Barcol hardness tester at Deon Research Centre: Precise hardness measurements for metals and plastics

What is a Barcol Hardness Tester?
The Barcol hardness tester is a portable measuring device used to determine the surface hardness of soft materials.
The device is particularly suitable for soft metals, plastics, resins and composites and provides a fast, objective and reproducible hardness value.
At Deon Research Centre, we use the Barcol hardness tester to:
- Quality control during production
- Material development and comparison
- Process monitoring and curing verification
Thanks to fast and reliable measurements, we can ensure product consistency and material quality.

Why choose the Barcol Hardness Tester at Deon Research Centre?
Our Barcol hardness measurements provide precision, speed and repeatability for a variety of materials:
- Fast and efficient
Ideal for batch testing and quality control of soft metals, resins and plastics. - Reliable material characterization
Measure surface hardness accurately and objectively, which is essential for process optimization and product development. - Widely applicable
Suitable for soft aluminium alloys, polymers, composites and curing resins. - R&D and quality control support
Our measurements help optimize curing processes, compare material options and check product consistent properties.
How does the Barcol hardness tester work?
The Barcol hardness tester measures hardness based on a spring-loaded conical tip (indenter):
- The instrument is placed perpendicular to the surface of the material.
- The indenter penetrates the material under constant resilience.
- The resistance that the material offers to compression is converted into a numerical Barcol value, usually between 0 and 100.
This method is fast, simple and non-destructive, allowing multiple samples to be efficiently tested without significantly damaging the material.
Applications of the Barcol hardness tester in industry
Barcol hardness measurements are used in various sectors:
- Metals and alloys: rapid control of the surface hardness of soft metals such as aluminum and copper alloys
- Plastics and composites: assessment of hardness, curing and consistency of material batches
- Resins and coatings: assessment of curing and processing quality
- R&D and Quality Control: Comparative Testing and Process Monitoring
At Deon Research Centre, we integrate Barcol hardness measurements with other tests such as Vickers hardness, tensile tests and DSC, for a complete picture of material properties.
